Creating:
Memory Vines
Exhibition
2023

Designers:Jacentea Kerlow
Becky Shen

My Role:Lead Designer, Fabricator, Perfumer, Installation

Coming up with a concept

I came up the idea of using scent to trigger memories after someone was wearing a perfume in class that reminded me of my kindergarten teacher. I thought that it was such a magical thing that this smell brought me comfort and transported me back to 5 year old Jacentea, singing songs and doing crafts with my very first teacher.

After pitching the concept, I was told
where my exhibit would fit in the
overall exhibition.

I modelled the gallery in Sketchup and
started figuring out the technical
aspects of the design
I began by exploring wait materials and overall aesthetic worked best for the vines.

Creating the scents

Prior to this project, I had no experience in perfumery. I was fortunate that my co-designer and professor were well versed in this field and, we began planning scent profiles that made sense in a forest setting and that guests would identify with.

One of our many scent workshops to nail down our base, heart and top notes.
More vetiver or less?
How do we make a perfume smell like fresh grass?

How did we make the vines?

Youtube tutorials taught me all I needed to know.

Step 1

Measuring out the jute rope.

Step 2
How are we going to hang this from the ceiling?

Step 3
Adding texture by unraveling the rope twists.
P.S the knot works!

Step 4
Insulating foam added rigidity and more texture.

Step 4

Time to paint.

Step 5
INSTALLATION DAY!
